It was really interesting hearing about the lives and history of the people who once lived in the Blue Mansion. From the very old and traditional, to the very modern and aimed at tourists! At night, you can watch the sunset from the viewing deck, and then see the city lights turn on as dusk falls. After nightfall, the bridge lights up in rainbow colours, hence the name Rainbow Skywalk. To give you an idea of the experience, I made a 1-minute video you can watch here:.

I really loved the experience. To visit, go to the Komtar building and ask to book tickets at the information desk at shopping centre level. Komtar is marked on Maps.

It took me around 15 minutes from where I was staying in the centre of the Old Town. This place is super popular with both George Town locals and tourists, and my food tour guide pointed it out as a famous dim sum restaurant.

In short, splendid. They serve really refreshing iced Chinese tea with no sugar, which is a bit of a relief after all the iced-coffee-with-both-condensed-milk-and-MARGARINE that you get if you order an iced coffee with milk in many parts of Malaysia. Welcome to day two of your Penang 3-day trip itinerary! Start your day with the locals and tourists at Toh Soon Cafe.

This place is famous for its breakfast and coffee. I can vouch for its deliciousness. Nasi lemak is a dish of rice, spices, and often egg and dried anchovies, all packed together tightly and wrapped into a pyramid shape in a bright green pandan leaf. Be warned that this place is very popular and can get super crowded. The most famous murals are actually marked on Maps. A trishaw is a 3-wheeled bicycle-powered rickshaw. Apparently, while the trishaw drivers are unlikely to act as tour guides and give you actual information, they DO know where all of the famous street art is located and can easily ferry you between all the major sites in an hour or so.

The selection changes every day. If the passion-fruit meringue cake is on offer when you visit, do yourself the favour of your life and have it. At some point during or after your street art and cake extravaganza, pop in and have a look at Khoo Kongsi , which is in the same area. Khoo Kongsi is an incredibly ornate Chinese clanhouse , and said to be the grandest clan temple in the whole of Malaysia. The historic 19th-century clan complex was built by wealthy Straits Chinese traders and includes a traditional theatre.

The one I had was filled with spices, potatoes and meat. If you can, visit Hameediyah with at least one other person, and order one of each of the dishes mentioned above so you can try them all. Although you can hike up the hill, the highest peak is over metres above sea level and most people take the famous funicular railway. Apart from the stunning scenery and panoramic views, Penang Hill also boasts colonial-era hotels and bungalows, a suspended walkway canopy walk called The Habitat, a mosque and a Hindu temple, and… an owl museum. You can get to Penang Hill by taxi , bus, or the hop-on-hop-off bus also stops near the funicular station.

You can catch it from both the Jetty and the Komtar building. Prices are super cheap, but vary depending on where you get on the bus. To take the hop-on-hop-off bus , get on the City Route bus and get off at station If you want to pre-book tickets for the funicular ride online , you can do that here. Penang is famous for its street hawker stalls selling incredible traditional Malay food. There are several night markets and famous hawker streets in George Town, most of which pop up in a certain area of town for just one or two nights a week.

But no matter what day it is, there will be something delightful being cooked up on a street near you. The easiest way to find the best night market or hawker stall nearby is to ask a local or the staff at your hotel — or, to be honest, you could simply go for a walk and pick up some tasty street eats from the stall with the longest queue! When it comes to Penang street food , these are the most famous dishes you should be looking out for:. Built over years ago, the temple is actually an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists from all over Southeast Asia. To get to Kek Lok Si Temple, you can take a taxi or get a public bus from the Komtar shopping building, which takes minutes.

This area is famous for its traditional Indian-Malay cuisine. If you are able to stretch your time to spend 4 days in Penang or longer! A lot of backpackers stay around Love Lane.

This area is within the historic centre, and there are quite a few lively bars and restaurants around here. A lot of the restaurants and bars in this area are a bit more touristy, with slightly higher prices and less authentic experiences. This is down to personal taste though.

And although I stayed elsewhere in the historic centre, I did frequent the Love Lane backpacker area several times. Purely because I am a nerd and love staying in and snooping around hotels.

These are a couple of my favourites. This Airbnb studio was, without exception, the coolest place I have ever stayed. I was so delighted with myself for having found it.
